Its been over a week now since I joined the millions and in all honesty, I am rather enjoying it.
Initially I did view photo-sharing social media with a certain degree of disdain. It was not for the 'serious' photographer or artist making 'serious' work. Only plebs who enjoy masturbating over their own sense of importance and require the validation of others to give purpose and meaning to their lives use such inane tools.
Well, I was wrong.
After months of gentle nudging from two artist friends I gave in and signed up. Their reasons were sound enough; its all about, as they put it, "getting the eyeballs to see the work".
Advice via magazine articles and pod-casts reiterated this as well as pointing out that now is the easiest it has ever been to promote one's art - with promotion being the key to success, those eyeballs really do matter.
The ease with which this can happen has amazed me, people from every part of the world can (with the correct hash tags) instantly view my images and show their appreciation. I too have enjoyed what National Geographic, NASA and the likes of Steve McCurry have posted since joining.
One of the strongest gripes for not joining the modern world was that I did not want another excuse to stare at my smart phone or to allow that little heart icon to become a morphine drip to which I longed for day and night.
I have witnessed myself already sliding into that habit. Any moment of vapidity or lull in conversation and the little black rectangle is already in hand with my eyes hungrily searching out those likes.
It is motivating to see that number growing but it cannot become more than what it is.
Rather, I view it as an avenue to see what other artists and creators from around the world are working on and to use them as inspiration and encouragement.
With this in mind it is a very, very useful tool.
